Benefits of pre-editing

Reduce time to publish

Given today’s accelerated deadlines and rising expectations for fast delivery, reducing the time it takes to get content to readers is a top objective for many publishers. By taking advantage of our pre-editing service, you can make a substantial reduction in your production times. Accepted manuscripts can be processed and returned in two business days, shortening your copyediting schedule significantly.

Maximize effort

With the budgets of editorial offices under increasing pressure, effectively prioritizing and managing the resources in your editorial office is crucial. Automating some of the more tedious, repeatable, and time-consuming tasks of manuscript editing, including styling and reference checking, allows for more concentrated time to focus on the important work of editing the content.

Automate for efficiency

When your file is submitted for pre-editing, it will be tagged with XML (Extensible Markup Language). The process of XML tagging identifies all the elements of the document and creates a machine-readable file that can be repurposed to provide a variety of deliverables, including fully searchable text online, content for e-readers, and archival material. XML also drives automation. Generating XML at the front end of the process creates a single source document file that flows smoothly into copyediting, paging, proofreading, and the revision stages of composition. Harnessing the power and flexibility of XML to drive rules-based automation allows you to benefit from the efficiency of a fully integrated digital workflow.

Features of pre-editing

Document styling

The primary function of pre-editing is to clean up an accepted article in preparation for copyediting and paging. During the process, journal-specific style points, formatting, and some elements of paging style are automatically applied to the manuscript from your individual style sheet based on article type. A large bank of preprogrammed style rules are available for creating your style sheet, and customized rules can be created as needed.

Reference validation and checking

One of the most time-consuming tasks in editing a manuscript is reference-checking. Through automation, pre-editing speeds up this task significantly. References are checked externally against the CrossRef and PubMed online databases to ensure validity and identify URLs. The citations and the reference list are compared to verify that every reference has a matching citation in the body of the article and that every citation has a matching entry in the reference list at the end of the article.

Redlines and reports

We will return to you a tagged and pre-edited Word document ready for copyediting. A redline version of the document displaying all the changes made to the original article is available. A detailed reference validation report, which includes retrieved DOIs and URLs, is provided, as well as a report showing the results of citation-and-reference reconciliation.

Collaboration and customization

During the setup stage, we will collaborate with you in creating your style sheet and programming custom style rules. We will also work closely with you to design a workflow that meets the needs of your editorial office and helps you realize the full benefits of pre-editing.
